Description
Sugarcane, locally known as “Aakh” or “Gaan” in Bangladesh, is a tall, perennial grass with thick, jointed fibrous stalks that are rich in sucrose. It comes in various colors, from green to yellow to reddish-purple, and has a sweet, juicy interior. Scientifically classified as Saccharum officinarum, sugarcane is native to tropical South and Southeast Asia. The largest producers globally are Brazil, India, China, and Thailand. Sugarcane is extensively cultivated in agricultural regions across Bangladesh, particularly in districts suitable for its growth. In Bangladesh, fresh sugarcane stalks are commonly chewed directly for their sweet juice, or pressed to extract refreshing sugarcane juice, often sold by street vendors, valued for its natural sweetness and energy boost.
