Description
Elephant apple, locally known as chalta, is a large, hard-shelled fruit from the Dillenia indica tree, native to South and Southeast Asia. The fruit has thick, fibrous flesh and a distinctly sour, citrus-like flavor, which is often mellowed through cooking. In Bangladesh, elephant apple is commonly used in curries with fish or lentils, or made into thick, tangy chutneys. Though too tart to eat raw for most people, when cooked, it releases a complex flavor that balances spice and sweetness beautifully. It is considered both a culinary and medicinal fruit, valued for its digestive and anti-inflammatory properties.
