Eggplant Thai, a specific variety of eggplant, is part of the broader “Begun” family in Bangladesh. While not always differentiated by ‘Thai’ specifically in local markets, similar small, round, or elongated green/white varieties are common. This type of eggplant is typically small, round or oval, and comes in shades of green or white, sometimes with purple streaks. It has a firm texture and a slightly bitter, earthy flavor, characteristic of many eggplant varieties. Scientifically classified as Solanum melongena, eggplants originated in Asia and are now grown globally in warm climates. Thailand, along with India, China, and Turkey, are major producers of diverse eggplant varieties. In Bangladesh, various types of eggplant are extensively cultivated and are a staple in many dishes, including curries (begun bhorta, begun bhaji), stir-fries, and fritters.
