Description
Jackfruit, locally known as “Kathal” in Bangladesh, is a massive, oval to oblong-shaped tropical fruit with a spiky, greenish-yellow exterior. It’s the national fruit of Bangladesh and is known for its uniquely sweet, fibrous, and aromatic yellow bulbs of flesh when ripe, resembling a mix of pineapple and banana flavors. Unripe, its flesh is starchy and can be used as a vegetable. Scientifically classified as Artocarpus heterophyllus, it is native to parts of South and Southeast Asia. The largest producers include India, Bangladesh, Thailand, and Indonesia. Jackfruit is extensively grown throughout Bangladesh. In Bangladeshi cuisine, ripe jackfruit is enjoyed fresh, while unripe jackfruit is a popular vegetable for curries, often cooked with spices and sometimes meat, providing a hearty and nutritious meal.
